A BUSY Johnstone road was sealed off after a car struck a lamp-post.

Residents are said to have heard a loud bang after the vehicle collied with the pole in Macdowall Street at around 1.45pm.

Fire engines, police and ambulance crews were called to the scene but no-one was seriously injured.

Eye-witnesses described seeing damage to the driver’s side of a black car after it struck a lamp-post on a traffic island.

The road was closed for an hour while police directed traffic away from the scene.

Inspector Cassie Glass, based at Johnstone Police Office, said: “We were called to reports of a road traffic collision involving one car.

“The vehicle collided with a lamp-post, however there were no serious injuries.”

A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service added: “Operations control immediately mobilised two appliances to the scene and firefighters extricated one casualty from the vehicle before handing that person into the care of paramedics.

“Crews left the scene after ensuring the area was made safe.”

A separate crash, also involving one vehicle, took place in Main Road, Elderslie, at around 2.30pm today but no-one was seriously hurt.
