Day centres which were facing closure have been handed a lifeline after councillors voted to fund them for another year.

West Lane Gardens, in Johnstone, and Whitehaugh Day Care Centre, in Paisley, were set to shut their doors for good after the Capability Scotland charity said it could no longer subsidise the delivery of services.

Last year, the charity was asked to work out another model which would enable it to continue running the services.

It will confirm its position next week – but Renfrewshire Council has agreed that, even if Capability Scotland severs its ties, the centres will remain open.

The local authority confirmed that, should there be no agreement in place, it will run the centres from the same buildings until May 2019, subject to approval by the Health and Social Care Integration Joint Board next week.

The day centres are owned by the council but leased to Capability Scotland to provide support to adults with learning disabilities.

Andrew Kinney, whose 48-year-old son Paul attends West Lane Gardens, said: “We are pleased. The centre has been Paul’s life for years. He struggles to retain knowledge and to lose the centre would be devastating.

“The fight is still on to ensure he can stay in those buildings beyond next year.”

Councillor Jaqueline Cameron, chair of the Health and Social Care Integration Joint Board, previously insisted service users “remained her priority”.

A council spokesman said: “At the budget meeting, it was agreed to provide £2.1million to the Renfrewshire Health and Social Care Partnership for the next year which includes support for West Lane Gardens and Whitehaugh. This will be discussed at the Integrated Joint Board meeting.”

A Capability Scotland spokesman said: “Further discussions on the future of services will take place at the Integration Joint Board meeting.”
