A JOHNSTONE school chose World Book Day to launch two new resources that pupils will use to improve their literacy skills.

Youngsters from Auchenlodment Primary can use their ‘speedy spelling’ pads at home to boost their writing skills – giving them freedom over when and what they write about.

And, as Auchenlodment pupils love to read both in and out of class, there are also special sessions taking place between their usual lessons.

A lunchtime story club is run by the school’s two classroom assistants, Lesley Bell and Karen Rutland.

Meanwhile, inclusion support assistant Marie Dixon runs a story club before school for children in primary one and two.

Rosie Rossiter, senior clerical officer at Auchenlodment Primary, said the team make the club fun and interactive so that children can’t wait to go back for the next session.

She added: Our pupils love to read and we can really see the benefits both in their attainment and in their confidence when reading aloud.”
