By Jennifer Black
THERE are fears Johnstone could be swarmed with dodgy notes after a haul of allegedly fake £20 notes were found in the town.
And local shopkeepers have been warned to be on the lookout for counterfeit cash.
It follows the arrest of a man in the Spateston area of Johnstone in the early hours of Thursday morning.
John Cameron, 53, was arrested in Auchengreoch Road and has been charged after allegedly having in his possession a quantity of counterfeit cash with the intention of tendering the money as genuine.
Police have now asked shops to be aware of fake Royal Bank of Scotland notes that could possibly be circulating in Johnstone.
Sergant Jackie Melvin, of the Community Policing Team, said: "Following the recent seizure of a large quantity of counterfeit currency, shopkeepers and members of the public should be vigilant and ensure they check bank notes passed to them as there may be counterfeit notes in circulation in the local community.
"In particular, attention should be paid to Royal Bank of Scotland £20 notes.
"Anyone who discovers a counterfeit note should hold onto this and contact their local police office."
In addition to the fake notes allegation, Mr Cameron has also been charged with the alleged supply of drugs from a premises in Leighcartside Street and Auchengreoch Road on Thursday July 29.
It is further alleged that he was almost two times over the drink drive limit and allegedly did not have insurance or a valid MOT certificate in Auchengreoch Road on the same date. It has further been alleged that he was in unlawful possession of cannabis at his home in Bank Street, Paisley, on Thursday July 29.
When Mr Cameron appeared on petition at Paisley Sheriff Court, represented by defence agent John McElroy, the case against him was continued for further examination and he was released on bail by Sheriff Colin Pettigrew.
