Cllr Gilmour believes local councils are being placed under increased pressure due to a lack of funding coming and feels more should be done to shore up the ever-degrading state of Scotland’s road network.

The Labour councillor for Johnstone North, Kilbarchan and Lochwinnoch said: “We should be calling on the government to provide additional funding to improve the standard we currently see on the roads.

“Local councils cannot be expected to take the burden off the amount of work needing done so we are calling on a programme from the government over a period of time to help take the pressure off of the councils.

“Potholes are a nationwide issue and something that needs to be looked at properly.

“We realise all the work can’t be done at once but more work is needed to help out councils to deliver a better standard.” Cllr Gilmour’s comments come in wake of his announcement that Johnstone residents are to benefit from £500,000 of road and footway improvements over the next 12 months.

Following a series of poor winters, parts of Renfrewshire’s roads have fallen into a state of disrepair.

The spend includes £200,000 being put towards new lights in the Johnstone High Street and Thorn Brae area, with Church Street, Quarry Street and Campbell Street also receiving funding for its paths and roads.

The villages of Kilbarchan and Lochwinnoch will also see investment with some of the worst roads in the area being dealt with through the new funding.

Cllr Gilmour added: “I am pleased to see money being spent in Johnstone villages.

“Work will be done in a basis where the worst affected areas will be fixed first. It will not only benefit businesses but also the people who work and live nearby.”
