Aileen McGlynn scooped two silvers at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, before being proposed to by partner Graeme Hinchcliff.

The stunned 41-year-old was gobsmacked when 38-year-old Graeme, who works for an internet firm based in England, dropped down on one knee to ask for her hand in marriage.

And, speaking exclusively to The Gazette this week, she said she was over the moon at her success at Glasgow 2014 and her engagement.

She added: “I was teary eyed when he proposed, I couldn’t believe it, it amazing.

“He said he couldn’t let me leave without some gold.

“We haven’t set a date for our wedding or made any plans yet as it was a total surprise to me but I’m absolutely delighted.” Graeme said: “After Aileen finished her medal ceremony she said she was coming up so I waited by the lift where I thought she was coming up and saw her walking up from the doors instead of the lift as I’d wanted so I went over, gave her a big hug and dropped to my knee and asked her the question.” He popped the question just minutes after Aileen and teammate Louise Haston finished second in the Para-sport Tandem 1,000m Time Trial.

And Aileen, who joined the Johnstone Wheelers Cycling Club back in 2002, also scooped Scotland’s first medal in the Games last Thursday.

Aileen and Louise took the silver in the Para-sport Tandem Sprint, in front of an electric crowd in the east end of Glasgow, who Aileen said helped her on her way to medal glory.

Speaking after her first medal success, Aileen said: “To win Scotland’s first medal of the games on home soil, in front of a home crowd, with a saltire on my back is fantastic.

“The noise that was coming from the crowd really spurred us on.” On Sunday night Aileen, who is from Paisley, was among the medals again as she and Louise Haston collected another silver.

They again lost out to their English counterparts in what Aileen described as a trying race.

She said: “I’m pretty knackered, I got it all out, the aim was to go as hard as I could for the first 500m and try to hold on, so I think we did that.

“I’m happy with our ride, I didn’t expect them to go as fast, so hats off to them, they did a phenomenal ride. I’m just happy to come away with a Commonwealth Games medal to be honest, we always aim for a Gold medal but the English girls are at the top of their game.

“The competition here was the best in the world, in the sprint and the kilo, with the two Australian pairings.

“It’s top competition and so for us to come away with the silver medal we’re really delighted.” While speaking to The Gazette this week Aileen said she would not have had the success she has experienced in her career were it not for her time with Johnstone Wheelers.

She explained: “I joined the club back in 2002 and have had a lot of help from members of the club who piloted me over the years.

“Firstly Martin Kier who had a tandem before I did and then Dennis White and Dave McKellar have piloted me for many years now.

“I would say those guys in particular have contributed to my success.” Aileen, who was given an OBE for her achievements in 2009, enjoyed her latest successes more than a decade after breaking a world record.

In April 2004 Aileen and Welsh cyclist Ellen Hunter OBE broke the World Record for the flying 200m women’s tandem.

And she said this week that her family were ‘really proud’ of what she’s achieved since first competing internationally.

She explained: “I’ve been at international level for 12 years now so I think they’re really pleased that I’ve not let my visual impairment hold me back from doing cycling and doing what I want to achieve. “Hopefully it’s a message to other people with disabilities to just get out there and do it and don’t let it stop you.” Aileen was the second cycling star with links to Renfwshire to get engaged in the Velodrome on Sunday night.

Chris Pritchard, who was brought up in Sheffiled but qualifies for Scotland because his mum is from Linwood, proposed to partner Amanda Bell.

He said: “I had been planning it for six months because you might never get another moment like this in your life.

“After experiencing the electric velodrome atmosphere, I could not think of a more appropriate or dramatic opportunity, so I went for it.

“All she could say was ‘Oh my God’ three times and then she finally said yes.” The 31-year-old keirin star jumped into the stand to ask Amanda Ball, a hairdresser, to marry him.

She accepted his engagement ring to huge applause after he narrowly missed out on qualifying for the medal race.
