But despite his heartache, the Johnstone man is preparing to take on a gruelling challenge in memory of his beloved papa.

Grahame, 34, will cycle 96 miles over a four-day course, beginning at Fort William and crossing the finish line at Milngavie, where his wife Claire, 33, and their two children, Alex, 14 and Chloe, 10, will be waiting to greet him.

This fundraising event which covers the route of the West Highland Way will run from April 1 until April 4, 2015; to raise funds Macmillan Cancer Support.

With only a tent to sleep in, Grahame will carry this on throughout his enduring cycle.

His Grandad was diagnosed with stomach cancer and sadly died when Grahame was young.

“My Grandad or what I called him, Papa, was a lovely, gentle man,” Grahame explained.

“He was very jolly and loved his family, his passion was golf and he taught Nick Faldo how to play at Welwyn Garden City Gold club. He died on Christmas Eve of stomach cancer, everyone that helped were fantastic.” To assist in his fundraising, Grahame has gained kind support from organisations such as; BT, Blacks, Tunnocks, Rangers Football Club and Virgin Trains First Class Lounge who donated two return travel tickets for anywhere within their railway routes.

When training for his challenge, Grahame’s bike was damaged and told this would cost an excess of £300. Thinking he would have to buy a new bike, Halford’s in Paisley supplied Grahame with a discounted rate to fix his bike, including two new tyres and bike cables.

Grahame would like to thank Halford’s and the other organisations that have contributed and got behind his fundraising.

He added: “I feel it’s time to give back to the charity for helping thousands of families through a difficult and sometimes hard time coming to terms with cancer.

“I’m a bit nervous about it as I’ll be going solo but it’s a challenge I’m looking forward to taking on myself.

“My son Alex wanted to come along with me but I told him he could do it next year as this was one I wanted to do alone.” Karen Mathie, Macmillan’s fundraising manager for the West of Scotland, said: “We are extremely grateful to Grahame for his continued efforts in raising much needed funds.

“We want to make sure no one has to face cancer alone but we can’t do it without the amazing people who fundraise for us.” To find out more information or support Grahame in his fundraising, you can access his Just Giving at www.justgiving.com/Grahame-Fyfe and code: TWHW52 or please call the Fundraising Support Centre on 0300 1000 200 or contact Karen Mathie on 078341 92236.
