Locals living in Fraser Avenue, Johnstone, say they are still unable to park outside their homes because of motorists who refuse to drive to the new Johnstone Railway car park to find a space.

A further 80 spaces have recently been provided by Scotrail, with the addition of a second level to the existing car park, which boosts capacity by almost a quarter.

However residents living in the streets nearby say there is still an issue with vehicles clogging the area.

Fraser Andrew, 39, claims he has been complaining about the issues for the last seven years and demanded action to be taken by the council.

The father-of-two, of Fraser Avenue, said: “The council had promised restrictions on parking in surrounding streets to force people to park in the new car park — but this hasn’t been done and the opening of the car park has made no difference in my street at all.

“I predicted this would happen and nothing would change. These commuters have their own parking spaces in these streets as it’s the same cars daily, and they won’t change their habits unless forced to do so.” The Gazette reported previously how Mr Andrew said the problem has become so bad that residents had even suffered car wing-mirrors being ripped off by passing traffic.

He also expressed concern for parents with prams and wheelchair-bound residents who are being forced to use the road instead of the pavements.

Mr Andrew continued: “The council got big praise for this car park but now it looks like they have done what we asked and the won’t be following up on letting people know they should use the new spaces.

“I’ve even had to call the police as I couldn’t get a vehicle out my drive due to cars being parked outside.

“It’s a lot closer to park in the car park than surrounding streets but people are still choosing to park in our streets.

“This means there is still a danger to kids, prams and wheelchair users, as well as drivers who still can’t see what’s round the corners due to the cars parked on them.” A Renfrewshire Council spokesman said: “The new car park at Johnstone Station has now opened. It provides an extra 83 spaces so there is now room for 423 vehicles. This additional capacity should have a direct impact on the problems that residents face in Fraser Avenue and Overton Road in Johnstone. We would urge commuters to make full use of the additional free parking at the station. However we will continue to monitor the situation closely to assess if alternative measures are required to address the issues in the area.”
