The British Transport police reported how the 49-year-old was killed instantly after being hit just after 6.45pm last night.
His relatives have been made aware of the tragedy.
A spokesman for BPT said: "There would appear to be no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death and a full report will be submitted to the local procurator fiscal."
Trains between Glasgow Central and Kilwinning were called off for the rest of yesterday evening.
A normal service is expected to resume today (Friday).
