Homes scoop award
LINWOOD may be in the running for Scotland's most dismal town, but no one told the judges for one of the nation's most prestigious property prizes.
As reported in the Gazette, Linwood has already been shortlisted for the 2011 Carbuncle "awards", where it will compete with Nairn and Irvine for the dubious honour of Scotland's worst town.
But residents needn't get too down, with the 10,000 population town now scooping the Scotland's Best Regeneration Project gong at the Herald Property Awards - in recognition for the Sanctuary Scotland Housing Association's £26m development.
Judges agreed the Brediland Road project was an outstanding example of how regeneration can "transform a community".
The award arrives just three months after the last of 190 new family homes were handed over.
Although the development was initially criticised by nearby residents, more than 450 Linwood housholders now call it home.
Among them is gran-of-two Mary Murphy, who shares a two-bedroom bungalow in Cowal Drive with husband William.
Mary, 58, told the Gazette: "I've lived in Linwood for 45 years and think the regeneration's brilliant - the area's much better than before.
"Everyone now takes a lot of pride in their homes which is great for Linwood as a whole."
