Social club sees red for Old Firm booze-up
AN illegal pre-Old Firm Sunday drinking session has resulted in a two-week booze ban for a Linwood social club.
Cops burst into the Linwood Welfare and Social Club, pictured, to find over 50 football fans flouting licensing laws by downing pints ahead of the 12.30pm Scottish League Cup final on March 20. Scottish pubs can't sell alcohol before 12.30pm on a Sunday.
In another incident, officers were met with a tirade of abuse when they called time on another late-night bender at the Napier Street club on October 9.
The officers found four customers knocking back drinks after hours - with one aggressive drinker who swore at officers fined for a breach of the peace.
Astonishingly, officers on a routine patrol had caught more drinkers in the social club after 1.25am the night before.
The Club Treasurer and Club President have been reported by the police to the Procurator Fiscal for several breaches of the Licensing (Scotland) Act 2005.
At a meeting of Renfrewshire's licensing board last week (Friday 18), the committee suspended the club's license for two weeks.
