A WOMAN's body has been recovered from the Clyde after a car plunged into the Clyde in Renfrew.

Police confirmed that the woman, who has not been identified, was the only person in the car.

A post mortem examination will take place in due course to establish the exact cause of death. 

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "The car remains in the water at this time and efforts are ongoing to remove it.

"Enquiries are continuing to establish the exact circumstances of how the vehicle came to enter the River Clyde, with crash scene examiners conducting an investigation at the location.

"Anyone with information that may assist the investigation is asked to contact officers at Greenock Police Office through 101."

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, the coastgaurd and Police Scotland rushed to the scene shortly before 2pm.

The recovery operation is ongoing just off Kingsinch Road, at Whimbrel Wynd.

One eye witness claimed that the woman collided with a blue Skoda estate car moments before plunging into the water.

A helicopter was also scrambled to the incident.

A coastguard spokesman said: "We received reports of a vehicle in the water with a person trapped.

"We have two rescue teams at the scene - Helensburgh and Greenock as well as as a coastguard senior officer and the HM coastguard helicopter from Glasgow as well as police, ambulance and fire.

"The helicopter was on scene and did a quick search and went and picked up divers. There's now divers at the scene trying to rescue the person that's trapped."

Two couples were seen going into a house with police officers. One was being comforted as she went into the property in the estate. 

Several cars were also damaged on the road. 

The police and fire services are also on the scene.

A police spokeswoman said: "An operation is currently under way after emergency services received a report of a vehicle entering the River Clyde near Whimbrel Wynd at the bottom of Lapwing Road in Renfrew at 1.20pm today."

A Scottish Fire and Rescue spokesman added: "We were alerted at 1.19pm on Thursday, July 21 to a report of a car entering the River Clyde near Whimbrel Wynd in Renfrew.

"We are currently in attendance. At this moment we are unable to comment on casualties or those involved."
