TRIBUTES have been paid to a popular depute headteacher after he lost his brave battle with leukaemia.

Liam Cullen, 43, was a popular member of staff at Renfrew High School and had previously taught at Gleniffer High and St Andrew’s Academy, both in Paisley.

Billy Burke, headteacher at Renfrew High, said the dad-of-two would be “sorely missed".

“Liam was a support and inspiration to the Renfrew High school community," added Mr Burke. “He was highly respected and liked by our pupils, parents and staff.

“He made a real difference to the lives of young people during his time at the school and was a highly-regarded teacher and leader.

“I have no doubt Liam would have gone on to be a headteacher himself.

“He will be sorely missed by the school community and by many on a personal level.

“I am incredibly fortunate to have had Liam as a friend as well as a colleague. Our thoughts are with Liam’s family at this sad time.”

Mr Burke also said Mr Cullen had been a role model to young people through the courageous way in which he dealt with his battle against leukaemia, which lasted for around three years.

He added: “His bravery and resilience are testament to his character and were a lesson for all who face adversity.

“The school community has previously rallied to show our support for Liam and his family by raising funds for his chosen charity, Bloodwise, and by raising a significant amount to present to him on his early retirement, due to ill health, last year.

“We will take some time to deal with his loss and then reflect on a fitting tribute to Liam.”

Mr Cullen, who was a keen cyclist, is survived by his wife Beth and their two young sons.
