A CARING Renfrew woman has launched a fundraising appeal for a close friend who is terminally ill with cancer.

Kirstie McGuire hopes that donations to her online fund will mean best pal Kirsty Calder can join her family on a final holiday to Tenerife.

Kirsty, 39, was booked to go to the sunshine isle with her children Kloé, 20, and Patrick, 16, last September after being diagnosed with cancer in the summer.

But the holiday was cancelled when cancer spread from her lung to her brain, leaving her fighting for life in hospital.

She pulled through but the cancer returned in December and doctors told her she had only a year to live – news that devastated family and friends.

Now Kirstie, who lives in Ferry Village, has set up a fundraising page through gofundme in the hope that enough money can be raised to make her friend’s final dream holiday come true.

Kirsty, from Cardonald, said: “I have had a hard time but Kirstie has been very supportive.

“We first met when we both lived in Cardonald and we just clicked. I am very pleased that she has made this kind gesture.

“I would love to go back to Costa Adeje, in Tenerife, where I had my first holiday abroad. It would give my family lovely memories to remember me by.”

Kirstie added: “Kirsty is a diamond, a rare and beautiful soul, always happy and bubbly and positive.

“Unfortunately, she is suffering from a rare and aggressive form of cancer, soft tissue sarcoma. The cancer spread from her lung to her brain very quickly and, after two gruelling surgeries, she then suffered a serious brain infection.

“Kirsty has had extensive radiotherapy and chemotherapy but she never, ever complains.”
