SCHOOLKIDS in Renfrew have been having a ball at Robertson Park Bowling Club after forming a new junior group.

Youngsters from four primary schools in the area have been taking it in turns to play the sport, with guidance from seasoned players.

The club joined forced with the Renfrew Community Sports hub to set up an Active Schools programme for the enthusiastic youngsters.

Pupils from Arkleston Primary, St James Primary, Kirklandneuk Primary and Newmains Primary launched the bowling sessions last month.

Children are being looked after by fully-qualified coaches, who have been teaching them the rules and how to develop their sporting skills.

And, luckily for youngsters from Kirklandneuk Primary, the sun was shining when the Gazette photographer caught up with them at their latest session.

Gillian Fulton, a primary six teacher at the school, said: “The children have been involved in the bowls group for a few weeks now and they love it.

“The coaches have been brilliant. In fact, I can’t believe this is just the first year they have been running these sessions.

“Everything has been so well organised and the coaches are so patient with the children.

“All of the kids have been taught well and have picked up lots of great skills.”

Ms Fulton is also hoping the school may go on to produce a future star of the sport.

She added: “There are only two weeks left for the pupils taking part in the sessions but a lot of them look likely to continue playing after that.”
