KIDS had a smashing time as they enjoyed tennis sessions in Renfrew.

Enthusiastic youngsters, including some totally new to the game, headed along to the courts at the David Lloyd Club to show they have the potential to be the Andy Murray or Johanna Konta of the future.

They were under the careful tuition of Blair Wilson, head of junior tennis at the Renfrew club, who showed them some of the rudimentary skills while stressing it was all about having fun.

The event was part of the national Great British Tennis Weekend, designed to get more people playing the sport, especially after the thrills and spills of Wimbledon.

Blair told the Gazette: “It was a fun and enjoyable event which let the kids pick up some of the basic skills of the game.

“About 20 took part, with parents joining in later in the day.”

It was the latest initiative in the Renfrew club’s ambitious drive to get more youngsters playing tennis.

The club’s programme has seen children aged from three to 14 progressing from beginners to national level performance tennis.

This success has seen a former junior member rise to become one of the UK’s top coaches.

Jonny Willcox, who is now a Lawn Tennis Association Level 4 coach, was named best British coach in 2016, having also clinched the West of Scotland and Scottish titles.

Neil Malcolm, sport manager at David Lloyd, Renfrew, said: “We are very pleased with the turnout and enthusiasm shown by the kids over the weekend.

“It augurs well for the future of the sport in Renfrewshire.”
