AN investigation into a pungent pong that has been causing a stink in Renfrew has found that a blocked sewer is to blame.

And the finger of suspicion has been pointed at a local business, which is thought to have caused the blockage, in Hairst Street, by failing to dispose of liquids such as oil and grease properly.

Renfrewshire North and West MSP Derek Mackay is now calling on people to take greater care when getting rid of such liquids.

He said: “Scottish Water has confirmed the blockage is due to oil and grease being released into the sewer.

“There is no doubt that this has been caused by liquid waste, such as oil, being disposed of inappropriately.

“It is vitally important that everyone, particularly businesses, dispose of oil and other liquid waste correctly.

“We all see the television adverts by Scottish Water explaining the importance of this. However, we can now see - and smell - the reality of the situation.

“Disposing of oil incorrectly, especially on a large scale, results in blocked sewers, foul smells and potential road closures if extensive works are ever required.”
