Visitors to a Renfrewshire leisure hub are reaching new heights...after the UK’s tallest indoor slide was unveiled.

And to prove that The Gazette will go to any lengths to get the big stories, our reporter Steph Brawn whizzed on down to Soar at intu Braehead to check it out.

At 16 metres high, the Big Slide at Climbzone is equivalent to the height of four double decker buses, with 83 steps leading adrenaline junkies to the top of the drop.

The stainless steel helter-skelter takes thrill-seekers from the top of Soar all the way down to the ground floor in a flume-like corkscrew tube within a matter of seconds.

Steph said: “My heart was going on the way up to the top as I wasn’t quite sure what to expect but it was a really fun ride.

“I enjoyed it so much I went on it three times back-to-back.

“I’d recommend it fully to any big kid or thrill-seeker.”

The Big Slide is yet another record-breaker at Soar, alongside Scotland’s only real snow ski slope and one of the tallest free-standing climbing walls.

It is the brainchild of Climbzone director Neil Mackay, who was inspired by a slide exhibition at the Tate Modern art gallery in London.

He said: “I wanted to offer a quick, cheap and fun activity which would appeal to kids, teenagers and adults alike. A slide ticks all the boxes, so I designed the biggest one I could fit in the building.

“The structure is stunning and I hope it has universal appeal.”

Laura Arena, manager of Climbzone, added: “The slide is really good fun and it brings a smile to your face straight away.

“We’re getting a good reaction from adults as well as kids, which is great.

“It will hopefully bring in people who haven’t been before or haven’t been in a while and want to rediscover the place.”
