DELIGHTED heroes, their friends and family all enjoyed a moving ceremony that honoured caring and courageous members of the community.

The annual Provost's Community Awards on Friday evening celebrated people who have given up their time to contribute to their communities, or have inspired others with special achievements.

Six-year-old Kieran McBride of Kirklandneuk Primary in Renfrew was presented with the Child of Achievement Award.

When asked by The Gazette what his classmates would say when they saw his trophy, Kieran said: "They'll say 'Wow!'"

Trinity High School Fairtrade Group won the Spirit of Fairtrade Award, while Vicky McMillan, 54, from Linwood, whose story moved many to tears, won the Special Needs Award.

Stewart Campbell, who nominated Vicky, said: "Vicky lives each day at a time, but she lives each day to the full."

David Blair, of Kilbarchan, won the Community Achievement Award in recognition of the volunteer work he has done as a special constable and as a Scout leader.

And true to his nature, as David left the glittering ceremony with his trophy, he revealed he was rushing off to take part in a Scout trip that very weekend.

The awards, now in their 12th year, were held at the Glynhill Hotel, Renfrew, and presented by Provost Celia Lawson and STV weatherman Sean Batty.

All of the nominees are put forward by members of the public.

Sean said: "I am delighted to be a part of the Provost's Community Awards.

"As a Renfrewshire boy myself it's lovely to be able to hear all these wonderful and inspiring personal stories of people living here in our communities. It was a fantastic evening for everyone and I'd just like to congratulate all the winners once more."

Provost Celia Lawson said: "The Community Awards is one of the most important and moving parts of my role as Provost. Each year I am blown away by the stories of what some of these individuals have overcome or have given to others and this year was no exception.

"It was a fabulous night and was as always a privilege to meet all the nominees and winners."

Each of the nominees, their families and the people who nominated them were invited to the ceremony.

Winners receive return flights and two nights accommodation for two people in London and £500 for the charity of their choice, and £200 spending money.
