THE family of a man who died in an alleged attack can’t afford to have his body flown home.

Nashatar Singh had been in a coma in the Southern General Hospital following the incident in Renfrew five weeks ago.

He died from his injuries on Friday - less than two weeks before he had planned to go back to India.

Friend Charlie Malhi, postmaster at a shop on Porterfield Road in Renfrew, paid tribute to the 36-year-old but admitted his family are too poor to fly his remains home.

He told the Gazette: “Nashatar was really nice - he didn’t bother anybody. He used to pop into the shop a lot.

“I was devastated when he died - it was absolutely shocking.

“His family are poor and cannot afford for his body to be brought back to India.

“He is married with a seven-year-old boy and a three-year-old daughter. His wife could not afford a ticket over either.

“He was due to go home on August 16 - he was here on a six month visa.

“His uncle, who lives in Kent, had sponsored him to enable his visit to the UK. It is terrible what has happened.”

It is claimed that the 36-year-old was chased and attacked in Thomson Street, just off Porterfield Road, in Renfrew on Friday July 2.

Paramedics rushed Mr Singh to the Southern General after the incident.

Police confirmed that a postmortem was expected to take place yesterday.

A Strathclyde Police spokesperson said: “Police can confirm that a 36-year-old man was assaulted on Friday July 2.

“He died on Friday August 6. A full report is being prepared for the procurator fiscal.”

Dylan Cherrie, 16, of Victoria Drive East, Renfrew, and a co-accused who is too young to be named, from Port Glasgow in Inverclyde, were arrested after the incident and appeared at Paisley Sheriff Court on Monday July 5 charged with attempted murder.
