Renfrew's golden boy aims for the top
HE began 2011 at the helm of Renfrewshire council, but even in his wildest dreams Derek Mackay never imagined he'd end the year at the Scottish Government's top table.
But last week, the Renfrew born-and-bred politician was made the Scottish Government's minister for local government and planning, marking the latest stage in a meteoric rise through the political ranks that began 12 years ago with his election to Renfrewshire Council at the tender age of 21.
Although dad-of-two Derek, 34, must now leave behind his commitments to the local authority to take the new role - leaving Cllr Bill Perrie as the sole SNP representative in Renfrew - the Renfrewshire North and West MSP maintains he will continue to serve every one of his constituents to the best of his ability.
As part of the former Renfrew High pupil's commitment to his home town and constituency, Derek will remain chairman of the Renfrew Town Hall project - due for completion in the coming weeks.
Immediately on the new minister's plate is handling the impending local government settlement, which affects council budgets throughout Scotland, with public service reform on the horizon.
After a busy but enjoyable first week in the job, the talented politician - the first ever Scottish Government minister to be born in Renfrew - is already getting to grips with his new role.
And despite his surprise at the speed of his rise up the party, Derek is proud of his new position.
He told the Gazette: "I've always done the best I can in any given job - and that's all anyone can ask of you.
"It was my passionate belief in Scottish independence that got me into politics, and I'm delighted I am now able to be part of a government moving towards that goal.
"I have had many goodwill messages, and remain a strong local voice never to forget my roots. As a councillor and council leader I have been proud to represent my ward and my county."
