Arrested for 'buying kids booze'
A RECKLESS Renfrew man was busted by cops for allegedly buying booze for underage teens over the weekend.
Eagle-eyed officers allegedly spotted the 36-year-old handing a blue bag containing vodka to three youngsters outside a Porterfield Road tenement at tea-time on Saturday evening (January 7).
The fast-acting cops tracked the bag back to a local off-license where a quick study of CCTV is believed to have shown the suspect buying the booze for the 14 and 15-year-old kids.
The man was soon arrested and charged with buying alcohol for children - known as "agent purchase".
Renfrew's top cop, Chief Inspector Stewart Rorrison, praised the work of the officers involved, which he said almost certainly prevented further crime later that evening.
He told the Gazette: "Under the influence of alcohol, not only are young people more likely to commit violent crime or engage in acts of disorder, the facts show that they are also much more likely to be the victims of violent crime.
"There is a zero tolerance approach to the sale or supply of alcohol to under-agers and this applies not only to those who operate our many licensed premises but also to any adult who is prepared to act as Agent and buy alcohol on behalf of any young person.
"The health consequences for the youngsters involved are obvious but unfortunately, the resultant increase in violence, disorder and anti-social behaviour is experienced throughout our communities.
"Violent crime and disorder in this area are well down on last years levels and I am determined to maintain that progress."
