BRAND NEW SCHOOL?
A major community landmark could be razed to the ground in an ambitious regeneration plan.
Education bosses are to explore the possibility of demolishing Park Mains High School in Erskine due to rocketing costs.
The far-reaching scheme would involve pumping a large amount of money into constructing a brand new state-of-the-art education facility on the site.
Refurbishment was scheduled to take place between July 2008 and August 2010, however, instead councillors will now consider a strategy to build a brand new school altogether.
The estimated cost of the refurbishment is now expected to be considerably greater than first anticipated when approved in 2004, possibly making the new build option better value for money.
Council Leader, Councillor Derek Mackay, said: 'The original plans for the refurbishment of Park Mains High School were developed in 2004, and as it has become clear costs may rocket.
'It is right to have another look to get the best for the area between the choice of refurbishment or a new school.
'The risks of refurbishment costs increasing and the possibility of time delays associated with additional work makes a new build all the more attractive.
'The SNP/LibDem Administration is determined to get what is best for the Erskine area.
'This could represent a major step forward for school building improvements in Renfrewshire.
'With the agreement of the council we will take this exciting new option forward, in conjunction with the local community.
'Members of the forthcoming Education Policy Board will meet on May 29 and will be requested to approve a proposal to conduct an options appraisal to evaluate whether refurbishment or new build represents best value.'
Both Erskine SNP councillors Iain Nicolson and Jim McQuade have backed the move,
Councillor Iain Nicolson said: 'As local councillors we see a real opportunity here.
'We are right behind the option of a new first class building to replace the ageing Park Mains High School.
'Park Mains is a major facility for the area.
'A new school would be fantastic and I am sure it would be greatly welcomed by the people of Erskine and surrounding areas.
'The current Park Mains High School refurbishment presents significant logistical challenges and doesn"t include the replacement of the school windows.
'We believe we can do better than this, so I look forward to the outcome.'
