HEADING HOME: Graham Mort grabbed his first goal of his second spell at Frew against Port Glasgow

By Kristian Truelsen - Renfrew 4 Port Glasgow 1

GRAHAM Mort marked his return to Renfrew with a deadly double to give them their first win in the Sectional League Cup group stage.

The midfielder came off the bench to ease the Western Park side to victory with a header before firing home a brilliant volley.

Mort was delighted with his two goals but insisted Renfrew’s main mission is securing promotion to the Premier League.

The midfielder celebrated Super Premier League success at Beith last season and now hopes to match that achievement in his second spell at the Frew.

He said: “I was happy with the two goals. I wanted to start the game but I was happy to get the two goals, especially the second.

“There’s a good bunch of boys down here and we are starting to get a good squad together as well.

“I played in the championship-winning team at Beith and it was a fantastic season.

“I would have wanted to play more games but I got my fair share. I just had to leave for my own benefit to get more game time.

“The boys did well here last season, getting to fourth place in the league, and I think we can push on this season for the league and it should be our main aim.”

The comfortable win meant the Frew recovered from last week’s disastrous defeat to the Vale of Leven.

Renfrew looked a lot brighter on Saturday and took control against the Division One outfit and Greg Miller put them in front on seven minutes when he stabbed home Michael Dickie’s pinpoint corner from close range.

Allan Prentice missed a gilt-edged chance on 28 minutes.

Stephen Reid’s powerful 20-yard strike was parried by Brian Tucker before Prentice side-footed the rebound over the bar when he should have buried the chance.

Renfrew looked like they would rue that miss five minutes before half time as the Port grabbed a controversial leveller.

Joe Donnachie’s drilled shot was spilled by Kevin Bell before the keeper scrambled back to stop the ball rolling over the line.

However, despite protests from the Frew players, the referee gave the goal.

Renfrew managed to break down the well-drilled Port Glasgow backline on 63 minutes as sub Matt McLean took advantage of Jamie Brown’s blunder to smash the ball home from six yards.

Mort made sure of the win seven minutes later as he nodded the ball home from close range.

And with 10 minutes left Mort bagged his second of the day when his vicious volley from the edge of the box dipped over Tucker and into the net.

Frew boss Dougie Mitchell said: “On Wednesday against the Vale we just didn’t play well at all and looked lethargic.

“We made a few changes and I’m quite happy about the victory and I think we were worth the 4-1 win.”
