M8 update
Delays for motorists using the M8 will be eased as the White Cart Viaduct re-opened two lanes.
The viaduct, which carries the M8 over the White Cart Water, had been subject to restrictions over the festive period.
Traffic management and 40mph speed restrictions on the viaduct will continue while strengthening works are being carried out.
Drivers returning to work after the festive period are reminded to ensure they allow sufficient time to complete their journey and may wish to consider alternative routes or modes of travel.
These vital works are on schedule to be completed by Spring 2012 and the continued patience of the public is appreciated.
The White Cart Viaduct was built in 1968.
The strengthening works will ensure the bridge is brought up to modern standards and can comply with current loading and safety requirements.
The nature of the works means that there will be small ramps on the road surface.
For this reason, and to protect the road workers, an average speed camera system will be installed to enforce the 40mph speed limit in place on this stretch of the road.
