Jordan Jackson was banged up for 15 months for repeatedly smashing a glass tumbler into Thomas Baxter’s head at a house party in Paisley last October.

And he was given another three months behind bars for breaking bail conditions by not informing the court he had moved address and failing to complete a Community Payback Order .

Sheriff Colin Pettigrew this week sent Jackson down for 18 months for the offences, telling him he had gone too far .

Paisley Sheriff Court had heard that Jackson and his friend Jamie Alexander began brawling with Baxter and his pal Darren Hendry at Samantha Clark’s house in the town’s Argyle Street.

Jackson and Alexander were guests at the bash, which took place just a stone’s throw from the University.

Violence erupted after a drunken Baxter - who only got into the party by chance, claimed that folk from Renfrewshire’s biggest town were untouchable to those from elsewhere in the county.

Bob Kerr, defending, earlier told the court the host feared Baxter and Hendry’s arrival spelled trouble.

He explained that the block of flats had “a dodgy door entry” and that Baxter and Hendry had got into the close and then in to the party.

The lawyer said: “Samantha Clark indicated the complainer and friend Darren Hendry came to the house.

“Thomas Baxter only got in because they were allowing Darren Hendry in.

“She was worried and told both that there wasn’t to be any trouble or nonsense from them. She said in her statement, ‘I had a gut feeling that something was gonna happen’.” Kerr said that Baxter and Hendry started acting like hard men, with Baxter telling Jackson and his pal Jamie Alexander, who are both from Johnstone, and the other revellers: “No one messes wae Paisley boys.” He added: “One of the two boys, Darren and Thomas, I think it was Thomas, kicked a bottle out of the hand of Mr Alexander, who was sitting on the couch with Jordan Jackson.

“He grabbed him, Jordan Jackson went to help and all four ended up rolling on the ground, wrestling and fighting.

“Jordan Jackson had a glass tumbler in his hand when this started which he used in the course of the whole incident.” He said that Jackson had been “defending” Jamie Alexander and was “trying to get the other boy off” him.

Douglas Hamilton told the court that 22-year-old Baxter first knew he was under attack when he heard glass smashing and the feeling of Jackson driving the glass into the back of his head.

The police were called and, when officers arrived at the scene, they could see that both Baxter and Jackson were injured. They were both taken to Paisley’s Royal Alexandra Hospital to receive treatment for their injuries.

Baxter had three wounds - a u-shaped cut, a vertical cut and a small laceration, needing a total of eight stitches to seal them.

Jackson had a cut on his finger that needed three stitches and, whilst at the hospital, the yob kept up his thuggish antics by attacking two cops.

The court heard he booted Constable Alasdair Whitelaw on the body, before kicking Constable Chris Allen on the head and kneeing him in the face. Jackson admitted three assault charges when he appeared in court earlier this month, and sentence was deferred for reports.

When he returned to the dock this week his lawyer, John Gardner, said he suffered from mental health problems and doesn’t get enough help with his condition unless he is behind bars.

He explained: “When he is out I don’t think he receives the correct level of mental health assistance that he requires.

“His mental health degenerates when he’s out - he is left out in the community without the support he needs.” He asked Sheriff Pettigrew to impose a sentence that would see Jackson monitored when released from custody.

But the sheriff said he was unable to ensure that Jackson would receive the correct treatment Gardner thought was required - or be sure that Jackson would accept the help.

He then opted to sent him down for 18 months, backdating the sentence to August 5, when Jackson was first remanded in custody.

As he did so, he said: “You were trying to assist another who you where with who was being assaulted but your actings went well beyond that.”
