Devastated bosses at Johnstone Burgh FC revealed they could be facing closure after the sick wrecking spree on Sunday night.

Ricky Cantwell, secretary of the club, said he is at the end of his tether after yobs set fire to a shed and kicked down brickwork, causing more than £2,000 worth of damage.

And he fears it could be the “final straw” for the club, which has been open since 1956, as the destruction has plunged them deeper into financial turmoil.

He told The Gazette: “We can’t keep paying out thousands of pounds to repair vandalism — we’re already at the bottom of the league.

“The club has already paid out tens of thousands of pounds on repairs. If this keeps up we won’t be here any longer.

“It’s disgusting. This has been going on for years now and the staff constantly face abuse from youths in the area.” Ricky had a nasty shock on Monday morning when he walked into his beloved club’s ground only to notice corrugated sheeting had been ripped apart and the walls of a shed set ablaze.

The incident at the Keanie Park ground is the latest in a series of mindless attacks over the years, this time happening just hours after a family fundraising event in aid of little Riley Lafferty, featured on page six of this week’s Gazette.

Mr Cantwell says youths are using the club as a hangout spot for drinking and causing trouble despite a number of reports being made to police.

And this latest set-back is another blow for the club who had only started up their new season last month before the louts struck.

“The vandalism is getting progressively worse,” Mr Cantwell continued. “We don’t have enough money as it is without having to pay out more just to repair damage.

“We have applied for funding with the Glasgow Flightpath Fund to try and raise money to buy a circuit television system to stop future attacks on the club.

“However if we don’t get this and the vandalism continues, I very much doubt we’ll be open for much longer.” Police confirmed yesterday they aware of the incident and are investigating the damage.
