The shocking figures have shown people in the area die at a youngster age than the Scottish average of 76.9 for men and 81 for women.

That places Renfrewshire sixth bottom of the 32 council areas across Scotland.

The statistics say that life expectancy in Renfrewshire is 75.7 years for men and 80.6 for women.

Commenting on the figures, local MP Douglas Alexander said: “It is unacceptable that where someone lives in Scotland has such an impact on life expectancy.

“The Scottish government needs to do far more to tackle the root causes of inequality in Scotland.

“If Renfrewshire even received just the average level of funding our local area would have £18 million more to spend this year.

“Labour’s plans to increase the minimum wage to £8 an hour and reform the energy market to stop rocketing gas and electricity prices will help families struggling with the cost of living crisis.

“Inequality between different parts of Scotland will only be reduced if young people in every community have the opportunity to get a good education and families have access to the best health care.”
