Tributes flooded in for Ronnie Longwill, who was killed after being hit by a car while making his way home from a night at the pub.

The 54-year-old had been drinking at The Wee Barrel, in Love Street, Paisley on Saturday night just hours before tragedy struck.

He suffered serious injuries and was conveyed by ambulance to the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Hospital where he later died.

The news that Ronnie had passed away shook large segments of the community, including scores of heartbroken colleagues.

Ronnie, who worked for home improvements firm Colourfence, was described as a “thoughtful and happy man, with a smile that really lit up the room.” Over the weekend dozens of his family, friends, neighbours and well-wishers descended on the crash site to pay their respects and leave a memento to the late businessman.

Among them were touching floral tributes left by those closest to Ronnie, and the ones that loved him the most.

Staff at The Wee Barrel, where Ronnie had socialised shortly before he was struck by the car at 9pm, paid a special tribute to their loyal customer, saying: “Always remembered, from the staff and your friends at the Barrell.” Also placed at the site were two glasses of whisky in honour of Ronnie’s favourite drink.

Another poignant note, left by close friend Michelle, said: “Thank you for your years of friendship and all that you have done for me and my family.

“My heart breaks knowing that I can’t pour you one last malt but today I will raise one for you.” Ronnie had been crossing Love Street as he made his way home to Blythswood Drive when he collided with the Vauxhall Astra.

Police said the 24-year-old man who had been driving the car was unhurt.

Traffic cops probing his death sealed off the street for several hours as they tried to piece together Ronnie’s final moments in a bid to establish exactly what caused him to be struck by the vehicle.

Sergeant Mark Miller, of the Road Policing Unit at Paisley, is appealing for witnesses.

A full report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.

He said: “I would ask anyone who was in the area of Love Street around 9pm on Saturday evening and saw the crash to come forward.

“Any person with information is asked to telephone Road Policing at Paisley on the non emergency number 101.”
