The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) crews were sent to the incident in response to a call from ambulance control made shortly before 1.50pm today (Wednesday).
Appliances from Paisley, Clydebank and Easterhouse attended the incident, with first responders reaching the scene within three minutes.
Civil engineers shored-up the site and gas monitoring equipment was deployed as a precautionary measure.
Firefighters, paramedics and NHS trauma doctors all entered the excavation to provide the man with treatment and work to bring him safely to the surface.
After being released via a stretcher he was moved to a waiting ambulance.
