The message comes after a number of residents in Johnstone reported how would-be-thieves had attempted to unlock their house doors over the last few weeks.
Locals expressed their fears after The Gazette reported a recent theft in the town’s William Street, prompting many others to come forward with claims they had spotted crooks attempting to break into their homes also.
Inspector Cassie Glass, of Johnstone Community Police, warned residents to be “extra secure” when it comes to locking their windows and doors.
She said: “It is extremely important that you lock your windows and doors at all times, no matter how safe you think your neighbourhood is.
“Opportunistic thieves are everywhere and are always looking for easy ways to gain access to houses and belongings.” Anyone with information is urged to contact Johnstone Police Station or dial 101.
