As revealed in The Gazette, doubt had been cast over whether the annual celebrations would take place due to the lack of a committee.

Outgoing committee members had failed to nominate their replacements, requiring last Wednesday’s EGM to be called at Bishopton Community Centre. And following discussions with those who attended, a new committee has been formed, safeguarding the future of the much-loved event.

Departing chairman Ronnie Dukes, explained: “Talks went very well, with 22 people in attendance.

“That included the outgoing committee, at least four or five local business representatives, a police officer, two members of the recently formed Erskine Festival Committee and local residents.

“After a question and answer session a new committee was formed. The new committee includes Jim Blair as chairman, Mike Tomensen as vice chairman, Suzi Gray as secretary and Elizabeth Marshallsay as treasurer.

“Another meeting is being arranged to give everyone that attended, and any other volunteers, the opportunity to become involved.” Over 40 years of tradition almost came to a head this year, and Mr Dukes admits it was too close for comfort following years of hard work.

However, now that the festival is safe, it has been scheduled to be held on Saturday, June 20.

Mr Dukes added: “It is a relief that a new committee has been formed that will see Bishopton Day and Week celebrate its 43rd year.

“The new committee start afresh with the full support of the outgoing committee. Some preparations had already began prior to the EGM which can now be realised and followed through by the new committee and their helpers “The legacy thankfully continues.” Mr Dukes will now hand over the reins to the new committee, but had this reminder for the Bishopton community: “There was a real danger that last year was the last Bishopton Day.

“If sufficient volunteers had not came forward, that was it, the end.” “The new committee will still need additional volunteers and there is still time for others to lend a hand.” If you feel like you can offer your support contact the committee via email at bishopton-day@hotmail.co.uk.
