The MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North expressed his delight at Tuesday's announcement that comes amid ongoing job losses at the site.

The investment will allow the company to create a new Centre of Competence (CoC) for the manufacture of aerofoils and a new location for the manufacture of mainline engine shafts.

The development comes several months after the firm revealed its intention to axe 180 jobs from its Renfrewshire base.

In March it said 90 jobs would go during 2015 and a further 97 during 2016.

However, the new investment means around 130 new employment opportunities will be created and that's good news as far as Newlands is concerned.

He said: "I am delighted to welcome the news that Rolls-Royce is to invest £60 million in their site in Inchinnan in my constituency - an investment to support the creation of a new Centre of Competence to support Rolls-Royce's business.

"Whilst Roll-Royce’s £60 million worth of investment in the site is, of course, welcome news to the workers at the site in Inchinnan and their families, as it potentially mitigates previously announced job losses, it is also great news for the local economy in Renfrewshire too."

The new facility will manufacture an extensive range of aerofoils, including turbine and compressor components, for Rolls-Royce engines that are no longer in high volume production, such as the Adour and BR715. This requires a flexible workforce with a high degree of specialist knowledge.

The new location for the manufacture of mainline shafts will produce components that sit in the core of all Rolls-Royce aero engines.

Mike Mosley, the firm's chief operating officer – supply chain, said: “Rolls-Royce is focused on transforming our global industrial base to develop our world-class, competitive supply chain, concentrating investment in high-technology and high-intellectual property in key areas to help us deliver to customers.

“Our investment in Inchinnan demonstrates our commitment to innovative technology and world-class facilities which will improve performance and drive profitable growth for our business. We recognise the dedication and flexibility of the Inchinnan workforce who continue to play a key role in the success of Rolls-Royce.” MSP Derek Mackay also commented: “I welcome this announcement from Rolls-Royce today, regarding the site in Inchinnan.

“This £60 million of investment is encouraging news for everyone who works at the Inchinnan site.

“I am particularly pleased as this could safeguard jobs at Inchinnan.” “Investment in any locally based company, particularly on this scale, is great news for the whole area.” Rolls-Royce initially invested £85 million in the facility at Inchinnan and has continued to invest over the last decade.

The new location for the manufacture of shafts will provide Rolls-Royce with capacity needed to deliver on our multi-billion pound order book. It complements our existing facility in Derby and capacity in our external supply chain.

This investment will potentially mitigate the impact of the job reductions announced earlier this year in Inchinnan as part of the Aerospace restructuring programme.
