Mitchell Connell, 12, was diagnosed with lymphoblastic lymphoma, an aggressive form of blood cancer, on June 25 this year.

He was due to start his first day of high school at St Andrew’s Academy last week but sadly couldn’t because of his illness.

His mother, Kirsteen Took Connell, held the family fun day on Saturday at the Lagoon Leisure Centre in Paisley, attracting hundreds of people.

Hosted by family friend and TV presenter, Carol Smillie, the cash raised on the day will now go towards the Schiehallion children’s cancer ward in the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow.

Kirsteen, 39, from Paisley, said: “I’m absolutely delighted by how successful the day was, it actually exceeded my expectations.

“So many people turned up and the children had a great day taking part in all the activities. Olaf, from Frozen, was really popular on the day as well.

“My son turned 12 on his second day of treatment and the ward were exceptional providing him with a birthday card, Argos vouchers, a cake and a trolly full of treats for his family when they came to visit.

“This is all paid for by charity and we were extremely touched so we wanted to do something to spread happiness to some of the other children in the ward.” The family will use the money towards creating a fun room for children around Mitchell’s age within the hospital grounds.

Kirsteen continued: “There is a Teenage cancer room funded by the TCT charity and this is strictly for over 13s and the playroom in the ward is decorated and equipped really for younger children.

“We wanted Mitchell to have something he could relate to and have some time with kids around his own age so he wasn’t isolated throughout his stays here, so we decided to raise money for some playstation and TV bundles.” A Just Giving crowdfunding page in honour of Mitchell has already raised over £8,000 in just 30 days.
