Haunting CCTV footage has emerged of the last moments of the murdered Glasgow-born backpacker being followed by her accused killer just before her body was found on a Goan beach.

Danielle McLaughlin, 28, was found dead in a secluded spot in Canacona, a popular area for holidaymakers in the southern Indian state, on Tuesday morning.

Local news outlets reported the former Liverpool John Moores University student - who was originally from Derry - was found unclothed and with marks on her head and face.

Now, though, the images show Ms McLaughlin walking along a street with a male following closely behind.

Police have told local reporters a man named Vikas Bhagat, 24, has been arrested in connection with her death. It is believed he is the man in the video.

They also allegedly said Bhagat confessed to raping Ms McLaughlin and killing her.

Some of Danielle’s friends are reportedly flying from Australia to Goa in the hope of being able to accompany her body back home.

Online tributes have been flooding in for Ms McLaughlin since the tragic discovery.

Glasgow Times:

On her own Facebook page, dated February 22, Ms McLaughlin posted: “Thank you to all my friends and family for making home so special and always looking after me. I am very grateful and the luckiest person I know... Off on another adventure... “

Dozens of people have since posted heartfelt messages onto the social media website.

One read: “Sleep peacefully Danielle, my thoughts are with your family and loved ones. The horrors you have suffered are over x x x,” while another friend wrote: “Love you Danielle, you had the most beautiful soul.”

A GoFundMe page for Ms McLaughlin has also raised a staggering €30,000 (£26,257) so far.

“This fund is to assist the repatriation and funeral expenses for our friend Danielle who was tragically taken from us all too soon this week,” reads the page.
