A woman was rushed to hospital following a head-on car crash in Howwood.

The smash happened at the A737 on Saturday afternoon, causing both cars to roll onto their sides.

A 48-year-old woman was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University hospital with a broken leg and remains in hospital in a stable condition.

The other driver, a 27-year-old man, suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley.

Five passengers were also taken to the Royal Alexandra Hospital for observations.

A police spokesman said: "We received several calls from members of the public regarding a road traffic accident that took place on the A737, near to the Howwood junction.

"It appears that there were two vehicles involved.

"Police, the Fire and Rescue Service and Scottish Ambulance Service all attended the scene and local diversions were put in place.

"In total, seven persons were taken to hospital following the incident, six to the RAH and one to the new South Glasgow Hospital.

"None were suffering from life threatening or serious injuries.

"Police officers remained at the scene for several hours undertaking investigation work and enquiries are still ongoing as to the circumstances of the incident.

"The road was re-opened at 6.20pm.

"Anyone with information in relation to the collision should contact Police Scotland on 101."

Police Scotland said a 27-year-old man is the subject of a report to procurator fiscal in relation to the accident.
