ANIMAL Support and Rescue hosted a fun dress-up day to raise funds.

The Howwood-based charity homes 30 horses, many either abandoned or unable to be ridden.

At the fancy dress day volunteers enjoyed the experience of owning a pony for a day, grooming and playing dress up.

There were around 20 people who came along and raised £600 for the rescue, which included funds from the raffle.

Costumes included Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, a cowboy and Indian, ballerinas, the big bad wolf and red riding hood.

Also in the mix was a horse dressed like Rapunzel, a doctor and patient duo and the Purple People Eater.

One of the directors of the charity, Karen Crawford said: “The day was a lot of fun and the costumes were fantastic.

“There were three age categories for best groomed; the under-10s, 10-25 and 25 and older which went to Gringo, Lucy and Harvey respectively.

“Rosettes were presented to the winning horses by guest judges and guests enjoyed some lunch and refreshments.

“All funds raised will go towards looking after the horses and ensuring that they have a better quality of life.

“Last year we spent £22,000 of charity money which went towards vet bills, buying food and bedding.

“We have several fundraising events in the summer to look forward to and hopefully raise more cash for the charity.

“Thank you to everyone that attended and made the day so special.”

The Animal Support and Rescue is looking for volunteers. You don’t need experience with horses and skills such as DIY are also welcomed by the charity.
