Scottish tap water is often praised for its excellent quality and being one of the safest kinds to drink.

However, anyone in Renfrewshire thinking of pouring themselves a glass should think again.

You may be tempted to run to the shops to stock up on the bottled variety after seeing these pictures.

Towns and villages across Renfrewshire have seen their water supply tainted with a disgusting murky brown substance.

In particular residents staying in Lochwinnoch's High Street have complained of their taps running dirty water.

Lucy Adamson said: "Actual dirt coming through ours."

Maggie MacKay said: "It's disgusting. I had two days in bed with severe stomach pain this week I'm sure it's related. I washed curtains yesterday and they had to washed again all covered in brown streaks."

Scottish Water recommended turning on a cold tap, preferably in the kitchen, for up to two hours for it to clear the discoulouring.

A Scottish Water spokesman said: "We are aware of some reports of discoloured water in the area of Lochwinnoch and would advise any customers experiencing this to run taps until they run clear.

"We apologise for any inconvenience caused."

In the meantime though, we recommend you grab a few crates of bottled water until this all washes over.
