ONE of Renfrewshire’s longest-running summer fairs returns this weekend - and promises to be bigger than ever.

A host of entertainment has been lined up for Lilias Day, in Kilbarchan, including a colourful parade featuring a number of floats.

There will also be a battle re-enactment, a tug-of-war tournament, circus skills workshops, trampolines, archery, a medieval camp, a music tent and the return of Radio Clyde’s George Bowie as guest compere.

The parade will leave Tandlehill Road at 1.30pm and proceed through the village to the steeple, before moving on to Kilbarchan Park, where it will arrive at around 2pm.

Cara Batin, who has been handed the honour of serving as this year’s Miss Lilias, will then read a proclamation to officially open the festival.

At 4.30pm, the Lilias Day raffle will be drawn, with the lucky winner going home £1,000 richer.

Tickets for the raffle can be bought in the park, at the stall operated by the Lilias Day Committee.

Kilbarchan residents and traders are also being encouraged to decorate their houses and businesses to add to the colourful spectacle.

Susan Calcluth, joint chair of the Lilias Day Committee, said: “Each year a fantastic display of creativity and fun is captured by people decorating their houses throughout the village.

“It’s so lovely to see people getting into the spirit of the day.”

Another annual tradition sees a local artist creating an artwork to become the Lilias Day design for the year.

And the 2017 version, Parade Around, is by Kilbarchan artist Tracy Kyle.

She said: “I wanted to include aspects of the whole of Lilias Day.”
