HUNDREDS of revellers braved the rain to show their support for this year’s Bridge of Weir Gala Day...and nothing was going to dampen their spirits.

Fittingly, the theme of the 2017 event was Commotion in the Ocean, with the celebrations attracting a bumper turnout, despite the bad weather.

The gala day parade set off from the Cargill Hall and arrived in Houston Road Park, where Kaylynn McKinnon was crowned as gala queen.

A pirate ship float set the theme for the day, while guests dressed up in their best sea-inspired outfits, such as sharks and jellyfish.

Thankfully, the skies cleared later in the event, much to the delight of organisers.

Event co-ordinator Chris Gilzean said: “I was impressed with the stallholders. All of them stayed, despite the downpour in the morning, and had smiles on their faces throughout.

“The gala queen and her two attendants, Darya Lavizani and Olivia Anderson, went round all of the stalls, which were run by charity organisations such as Marie Curie, as well as churches from the area and the tenants and residents association.

“It is a big community event and a great way for all the family to come out together, from toddlers to grannies.

“The St Columba’s School Pipe Band put on a good show and big thanks also go to the Girl Guides, Scouts and Air Cadets, who played a big part in helping out.”

There were also prizes for the best Commotion in the Ocean outfits, with the prizes going to Hunter Butterworth (pre-school), Hannah McQuade (primary) and 2nd Bridge of Weir Rainbows (group).
