THE world came to Bishopton as thousands of people gathered for the village’s annual gala day.

Organisers chose ‘flags of the world’ as the theme for this year’s celebrations, with various countries represented at the Bishopton Day parade.

The St Columba’s School Pipe Band led the way, followed by community groups and schoolkids.

Also in the parade was a classic fire engine and three massive floats, provided by M.P. Burke Transport, for Bishopton Primary, St John Bosco Primary and Bishopton Parish Church.

This year, organisers broke with tradition by not having a Bishopton Princess and attendants to lead the events.

Instead, that honour was handed to Olivia Duffy, of Bishopton Primary, and Amy Reid, of St John Bosco Primary, who were winners of their schools’ Good Citizens Award.

Mike Tomensen, who helped to organise the celebrations, said: “Fancy dress costumes on the day were fantastic, from Mexican sombreros to cowboys and indians.”

After the parade, guests enjoyed a host of games and activities at Holmpark sports field.

There was a variety of entertainment on offer, including pony rides and a bouncy castle for kids.

Mike added: “The gala day capped off lots of fun during Bishopton Week.

“I’d like to thank all who came along to Bishopton Day and a special thank-you goes to all of our volunteers. We could not do Bishopton Day without their support.”
