BAKERS from across the west of Scotland gathered in Lochwinnoch to compete for the inaugural ‘Sconnoisseur of the World’ title.

Cakery No.5, the village’s cake shop, was packed out with contestants from Greenock to Motherwell all battling it out to prove they were cream of the crop when it comes to scone-making.

The competitors had 45 minutes to bake the perfect plain scone for a team of judges which included broadcaster and author Vanessa Collingridge and Paisley and Renfrewshire South MP Mhairi Black.

The winning scone was baked by Glasgow City College student Martin Downs.

Community councillor David Bain, who organised the contest, said Martin was the unanimous choice amongst the scone-scoffers.

He said: “Martin’s scone was just so light and golden and it wasn’t too over-baked.

“He was miles ahead in terms of flavour, texture, appearance and presentation.

“Everyone else was pretty close but he was the resounding choice.

“Everyone took their baking very seriously but also had fun. There was actually a real sense of tension when the judges were making their way around.

“People really put some effort into it.

“We really hope we can hold it again next year and perhaps look more into speciality scones.”

Ms Black added: “It was a pleasure to go along and help judge the contest.

“Well done to everyone who took part.”
