Proud moment for village post office
A PHILANTHROPIC Bridge of Weir woman who donated thousands to the cause became the first customer at the villages new community-run Post Office last week.
Generous Eileen Lamont was the first in what the community group behind "The Bridge" venture hope will be a long line of villagers to make use of the resurrected service - housed in Bridge of Weir's old library.
Around £20,000 was donated by Bridge of Weir residents to help make the dream a reality.
A sizeable group of villagers, councillors and community groups and representatives turned for last Monday's ribbon cutting ceremony, which marked a significant step forward for the project that will eventually yield a vibrant community hub.
As well as the post office, the group - headed up by chairman Paul Birch - also hopes to include a Fairtrade shop, DVD and record exchange and community meeting space inside the Main Street building, with work on that second stage due to begin in the New Year.
Bridge committee member Donald McKenzie, who has lived in Bridge of Weir for 15 years, told the Gazette: "The opening was a fantastic event and is really great news for the village."
The post office will be open six days a week - from 9am till 5pm on Mondays, from 1pm till 5pm on Tuesdays and Fridays, from 10am till 2pm on Wednesdays and Thursdays and from 9am till 1pm on
Saturdays.
