John Woods, a serving police officer, was killed when his Kia car was involved in a collision with an articulated lorry being driven southbound by a 54 year-old man.
Emergency services attended the scene, near Burnhouse Village, Beith, Ayrshire, at around 1.30pm but the 42 year-old dad-of-three died at the scene. He was not on duty at the time of the crash.
The driver of the lorry was uninjured but is badly shaken as a result.
Sergeant Kevin Blackley of the Divisional Road Policing Unit based at Irvine Police Office is appealing for any witnesses to the crash to contact Police Scotland on 101.
