But that’s exactly what Vanessa Ewing did for her son Oscar Blair, who last month decided to ask nursery friends to donate to charity rather than bring him a birthday present on his special day.

In an industry where it seems there are so many tragedies, or constant news of crime and destruction, it is heartwarming stories like these that can make the world seem like a better place.

However, it is great to see parents educating their children about the importance of helping others during times of need.

By helping more young children understand grief or pain, it will no doubt provide them with enough compassion to decide to continue helping many others in future.

A big well done to the selfless youngster and his mum for giving us something to smile about this week.

Meanwhile, another touching story we have featured in this week’s paper is the fundraising drive kickstarted by married couple Graham and Elaine Milligan, who have organised a charity football match in honour of football star Fernando Ricksen, a former Rangers player who supporters have taken to their hearts.

Many of those who follow football, and even those who don’t, will know of the footballer’s public struggle with Motor Neurone Disease and how quickly this has caused him to deteriorate.

The look of stress caused by his illness is etched almost permanently on Ricksen’s face and, echoing the words of Elaine, it is saddening to see such a powerful force have to endure this debilitating disease.

Let’s hope the charity football match not only helps to raise cash towards helping those living with MND, but also helps to raise awareness of the symptoms it causes.
