The claims — which includes one ridiculous suggestion that a popular Hollywood film predicted the accident — belittle the horror that killed six people and left one Renfrewshire teenager seriously injured in hospital.

Despite it being only a few weeks since the crash took place, I’m shocked but not in the least bit surprised that a series of insensitive theories are already appearing online.

Perhaps one of the most extreme concoctions is claims the crash was terror-related, despite the fact both police and the local authority have vehemently denied this.

Social media has been flooded with posts linking to articles which point the chaotic scene to this theory.

Theorists have also been drawing comparisons between the incident and a scene which was filmed near the square in Brad Pitt-starred film World War Z.

During the film, Pitt is driving his car when a bin truck suddenly crashes into several cars as pedestrians scramble out of the way.

The movie bin lorry careers along Cochrane Street, before coming to a stop on the corner of George Square, yards away from the real accident.

Viewers on Youtube and a number of internet forums are convinced the film scene is a reference to the December 22, 2014, crash.

While the incident is still being investigated, police have said it was not a terrorism-related, and “nothing more sinister” than a fatal traffic accident.

It is believed the lorry driver may have lost control after suffering a heart attack or a seizure. And some witnesses reported seeing him slumped over the wheel. He was among eight people taken to hospital, but has since been released.

But one particular website, which we have chosen not to name, has made horrifying claims that the tragedy is linked to a Jihad attack the previous day in France, also involving a bin lorry.

The conspiracy theory is that it was a Muslim bin driver who is being protected by the State through an enforced news blackout and who did not suffer a heart attack. In essence, these bigoted claims are beyond preposterous, and this was clarified once the name of the driver was actually released.

Yet there are still so many people already who have shared these concoctions, with the complete belief that they are true, without thinking how they could harm the victims and their families.

A delusional narrative like this also forgets the impact this could have on the driver, who is also suffering from the accident, and could end up leading to even worse reprisals.

So many lives have been cut short and this is a tragedy that will not be forgotten anytime soon, if ever.

However it’s about time we belittled these madcap and harmful conspiracies. Enough damage has been done.

No one yet has all the facts to know how this unimaginable tragedy happened. But we must continue to respect those who were involved.
