ST Mirren Warriors notched up a valuable win over Tameside Owls at the Lagoon Centre last Sunday.

The victory was in no small part to wheelchair tennis ace Gordon Reid.

The Australian Open champion joined the Paisley wheelchair basketball club during a break in his schedule and turned in a star performance.

It was a tussle in the bottom half of the table with the Warriors considered favourites and Owls trying to salvage something from their season and avoid a relegation play-off.

True to their favourites tag the Warriors stole the ball after the tip off and made for a fast break, Gordon Reid made the first basket, picking up the two points plus a single free throw after drawing the foul in the process.

A turnover in possession resulting from the pressure the Warriors were exerting left Bobby Park open and he was able to sail in for a lay-up.

The Owls were all but pinned back in defence, save for a few baskets from the owls as the Warriors settled into defence.

Some patient play in attack and inexperience in defence allowed the Warriors to draw out the Owls and allow David McWilliam exploited the split in the defence and score two lay-ups.

The Owls had no answer for the driving efforts from Gordon Reid, Gary Davidson and Simon Logan who got space from the screening and picking of the low point players, using their height well. Points from every member of the team therefore resulted in a 16-10 lead at the end of the quarter.

Moving into the second, Warriors used Bobby Park to hold the ball up in attack whilst the rest of the Warriors tried to drive at the opposition.

The sheer speed Warriors could exploit on court clearly frustrated the Owls, with the foul count from them soaring and the Warriors receiving free throws.

Points from Reid (5), Davidson (4), Logan (3) and Park (2) meant the Warriors were in control 29-18 at the halfway point.

After half-time Warriors continued with their fast-paced attack with Gary Davidson and Gordon Reid again terrorising the Owls defence as they started to find themselves in foul trouble, and with neither team able to field any subs it was critical they remained disciplined. Warriors let off the press as they were firmly in control 43-28 at the third quarter.

In the last quarter, with the Owls having no answer, the Warriors had boundless confidence and a free flowing attack with Gordon Reid gunning for a personal record scoring performance.

Final score: St Mirren Warriors 61, Tameside Owls 36

The Owls were put to the sword with the difference in class clear to see. The Warriors' scorers were Gordon Reid (28), Gary Davidson (16), Bobby Park (8), Simon Logan (5) and David McWilliam (4).
