ST Mirren manager Alex Rae faces an anxious wait on news of a scan to Rocco Quinn and admitted the extent of the midfielder's injury might influence his signing plans.

Rae has resigned Lawrence Shankland for a second loan spell from Aberdeen after the striker impressed in Paisley last season. Rangers winger Tom Walsh has also joined on loan until January.

The Buddies boss had previously indicated he wanted another striker as well as Shankland but has now said Quinn's injury could alter his plans.

The former Ross County midfielder looked in some distress as he was stretchered off in St Mirren's 3-2 win over Livingston on Saturday.

Rae is short of options in the central midfield role without Quinn, Kyle Hutton and Stevie Mallan are the only obvious options.

Quinn went for a scan on Tuesday and if there is bad news Rae says it is an area of his squad he will have to add to.

He said: "Rocco had a scan at 4.30pm today (Tuesday) and we're waiting on the consultant to come back with the findings but he's in a bit of discomfort at the moment.

"We need to make a decision. We thought we had finances for one but we're not quite sure if we have enough at the moment.

"We will have to find money from somewhere. That may well be if we progress through the cup that would free up some money to maybe get someone in on loan.

"I don't know, we might send someone out on loan to free up some money once we asses the information we get from Rocco."

Speaking after Tuesday's last gasp 1-0 win over Ayr United, Rae reserved special praise for man of the match Lewis Morgan.

The winger was in blistering form, going past Ayr players at will in the second half and Rae hopes it is a sign of things to come.

He said: "We missed the penalty and in the first half we were laboured. I said to them at half-time that we were looking for some sort of spark, some intensity to our play.

"I think it is fair to say that we got that particularly through young Morgan.

"We were very much aware of what Lewis can bring. At the end of last season he set up the winner for Keith Watson at Alloa and scored the equaliser against Rangers.

"We have to give the boy credit because when he was injured when I first come in he started work to physically bulk up.

"He had natural pace but with that physicality now he is just bursting past people. Their right back Nicky Devlin is very good, I've watched him a few times, and he made it very difficult for him tonight.

"If he continues to play like he'll be a big asset for us."
