Braehead Clan’s opening league weekend ended without a point after Ryan Finnerty’s side were beaten 5-1 in their first trip to Ice Arena Wales by the Cardiff Devils on Sunday.

Devils made an early advantage count when Trevor Hendrikx sat for an instigator penalty after going toe to toe with former team-mate Andrew Lord.

Joey Martin was the man to get the goal and within two minutes of the start, Braehead were a goal down.

Layne Ulmer added a second for the Devils shortly after as they started to take control of the game in terms of the scoreline.

Braehead hit back early in the second period through Alex Leavitt, after he was assisted in his effort by Jeff Ulmer.

But the home side reopened their two-goal lead through Matthew Myers before Jake Morrissette applied a fourth for Cardiff right at the end of the second period.

Braehead’s night was to get worse as Morrissette added his second and Cardiff’s fifth of the night as their lead became more comfortable, leading to them taking the points in the end.

The result came a day after Clan suffered defeat in their opening Elite League game of the new season as they went down 4-1 to Nottingham Panthers.

Clan were first to find the net when Matt Beca’s square pass across the crease found Scott Pitt at the back post, who smashed it past Miika Wiikman.

The lead lasted 75 seconds when Panthers took advantage of their first powerplay opportunity as Cody Carlsson sat for an interference call.

The game failed to reach the same heights in the second period, but it was no less closely fought as both sides looked for the go-ahead goal.

However Nottingham were able to get the second when Dan Spang’s effort from the inside right fizzed past Michal Zajkowski and into the net to give them the edge going into the final period.

Lawrence slammed home a third for the visitors on the powerplay after Brad Moran’s pass found him lurking at the back post.

Then Erik Lindhagen completed a good night’s work for the Panthers with an empty net goal to make it two wins from two in their league campaign so far.

Head coach Ryan Finnerty admits his team have to improve but he isn't pressing the panic button just yet.

He told Clan Radio: "It's frustrating because the team is nowhere near the level that they will compete at and we will consistently play at.

"We're going through some growing pains and we're not clicking. It's two games into the season and we're not panicking.

"But at the same time this isn't accepted by any stretch of the imagination and we have to adjust.

"As a group we have to come together and get through it."
