St Mirren West College Scotland 71 Falkirk Fury 58

St Mirren’s Junior Men took on old rivals Falkirk Fury last weekend as the Saints prevailed with a largely dominant display at Renfrew Sports Centre.

The home side won the tip and soon scored through a characteristic three-pointer from Callan Low.

Baskets were traded by both sides in the minutes that followed with Fury edging into the lead.

Two buckets from Mikey Irvine helped St Mirren take a quarter-one lead of 20-16.

The away side tightened up their defence in quarter two which meant fewer scoring opportunities for Saints.

However, Jack Thomson started to make an impact on the game, showing why he is one of Scotland’s finest point guards as the Paisley side won Q2 14-10.

Although the lead was only eight points, Saints always looked as if they could step up another gear. And so it proved in the third quarter.

Alistair Harris, in only his second ever U18s outing, gave the team great energy. Vice-captain Callan Low continued his impressive start to the season, top-scoring for the second game in succession.

St Mirren won Q3 23-15 to take a 16-point lead into the final quarter.

With Saints’ players thinking the game was won, their concentration levels dropped slightly.

Consequently, Fury reduced the deficit but coach Stevenson’s team were always in control of this match.

Fury took Q4 by 17-14. A final score of 71-58 gives Saints two wins from two games and they sit top of the league table.

St Mirren top scorers: Callan Low 21 points, Mikey Irvine 11 points.
